The gland sits just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra. Muscle fibers in and around it help control the flow of urine and semen. When it works quietly you never notice it.

Why does the prostate grow with age?
Doctors do not have one tidy answer. They do know growth is common and not cancer.
The growth is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. Because the urethra runs through the gland, extra tissue can squeeze it. The result is a weak stream, urgency and night-time trips (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)).

What else can go wrong with the prostate?
Three things are worth telling apart: BPH, inflammation and cancer.

How do you look after prostate health?
Keep up with checkups, and tell your doctor about urinary changes.
For symptoms, the AUA puts lifestyle first: less fluid before bed, less caffeine and alcohol, and activity (AUA BPH Guideline (Sandhu 2023 amendment)). For PSA screening, the USPSTF calls it an individual choice at ages 55 to 69 (USPSTF, Prostate Cancer Screening).
