NIDDK calls BPH non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, with symptoms such as a weak stream, urgency and night-time trips (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)). Cancer is found by tests, and early cancer may cause no urinary symptoms at all.

Can a PSA test tell BPH from cancer?
No. A high PSA is a reason for more tests, not a diagnosis.
The National Cancer Institute says BPH and prostatitis can raise PSA. About 25% of men biopsied for a high PSA are found to have cancer (NCI, PSA Test Fact Sheet). So a raised number is more often something else.

Can a man have both BPH and prostate cancer?
Yes. Having one does not rule out the other.
A weak stream suggests BPH, but a man with BPH still needs the same checks as any other man his age. Relying on symptoms can miss things.

Do supplements treat BPH or prevent prostate cancer?

NCCIH calls saw palmetto probably not helpful for BPH (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto). In the SELECT trial of about 35,500 men, vitamin E did not prevent prostate cancer, and after longer follow-up the men taking it had a 17% higher risk (NIH ODS, Vitamin E).
