Proprietary Blend Meaning: One Total, Many Unknown Amounts
Proprietary blend meaning, in plain words: the label lists a group of ingredients under one name with a single total weight, and does not say how much of each is inside. The first ingredient may be most of it or almost none. The Protoflow panel has no blend and prints an amount for each of its 14 lines.

The term01
What does proprietary blend mean on a supplement label?
It means the maker prints one total for a group of ingredients and keeps the split private.
US rules call for the term Proprietary Blend, or a descriptive or fanciful name, in the panel (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). Under it you see ingredient names and one weight for the whole group.
Makers say the split is a trade secret. The cost to you is that you cannot tell if a useful herb is present at a studied dose.
A worked example02
Why does a single total tell you so little?
The same 500 mg total can hide very different recipes.
Take an invented blend of 500 mg holding herb A, herb B and herb C. The label may list them by weight order, but not the weights.
| Herb | Split 1 | Split 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Herb A | 450 mg | 100 mg |
| Herb B | 40 mg | 200 mg |
| Herb C | 10 mg | 200 mg |
If a trial used 320 mg of herb A, only the first split is even close. The label cannot tell you which one you bought.
Protoflow03
Does Protoflow use a proprietary blend?
No. Each of its 14 lines has its own printed amount (Protoflow bottle label).
The panel runs from vitamin E at 13 mg to hawthorn and epimedium at 250 mg each, with saw palmetto at 84.5 mg. Printed amounts let you check doses against trials, which is why we can say the saw palmetto line is below the 320 mg CAMUS used (Barry et al., JAMA 2011 (CAMUS)).
The sales page does the opposite. It names 8 botanicals and gives no amounts, so judge the product by the panel.

How do you spot a blend before you buy?
Look for one weight under a group name, and ask for the split.
- A name such as Complex or Matrix followed by one total
- Several herbs sharing a single weight
- A sales page that lists ingredients with no amounts
A printed amount is a start, not proof of quality. It does not show purity or whether the plant part is the studied one. Read the full method in how to read a supplement facts label and see testing and quality.
FAQ05
Proprietary blend questions
Is a proprietary blend illegal?
No. The rules allow it, as long as the blend is named and the total is shown (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). It is legal, but it hides the split.
Why is the first ingredient in a blend not always the biggest?
On many panels the order follows weight, but the amounts are not shown, so the gap between first and last stays unknown.
Does a blend mean a product is low quality?
Not by itself. It only means you cannot check the doses, so you cannot compare them with studies.
Does Protoflow hide any amount at all?
No line is hidden. The total is 1,619 mg across the day's two capsules and all 14 lines have amounts (Protoflow bottle label).
Can you ask a maker for the split inside a blend?
You can ask, and the order desk is where to start. A maker may decline, which is itself useful to know before you buy.
