How to Read a Supplement Facts Label, Step by Step

Quick answer

To read a supplement facts label, start with the serving size, then the amount of each ingredient, then the Daily Value column, then the other ingredients and allergens. On the Protoflow panel a serving is 2 capsules and a bottle holds 30 servings. Every amount on it is for those two capsules.

Five steps01

What are the steps to read a supplement facts label?

Read from the top of the panel down, and read the small print last.

The panel title is Supplement Facts, followed by Serving Size and Servings Per Container, then amounts per serving (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). That order is your reading order.

  1. Serving size

Is a serving 1 capsule or 2? On Protoflow it is 2.

  2. Amount per serving

Compare each amount with studied doses, not with the front of the bottle.

  3. Daily Value

Only some lines have one; the rest say Daily Value not established.

  4. Other ingredients

Fillers, capsule shell and allergens sit here.

  5. Directions and cautions

A real panel02

What does the Protoflow panel show when you read it this way?

A two-capsule serving, 30 servings and 14 amounts.

Common traps03

Which label details do shoppers miss most?

Percent Daily Value, allergens and the form of each ingredient.

A high percentage is not a good sign by itself. Niacin at 469% looks generous, but 75 mg is above the 35 mg upper limit for supplemental niacin (NIH ODS, Niacin).

Soy is one of the nine major allergens, and its source must appear on the label, either in parentheses or in a Contains line (FDA, Food Allergies). Here it shows as soy protein concentrate under other ingredients.

Next step04

What should you do after you read a label?

Show it to a pharmacist, especially if you take any medicine.

Bring the panel to the counter

A pharmacist can check each line against your prescriptions. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.

For a blend with no amounts, see proprietary blends explained. For this bottle, the Protoflow label walk-through goes line by line.

FAQ05

Reading a label, questions

Why is the serving size on a label sometimes not one capsule?

Makers set it to match their directions. Protoflow's is 2 capsules, so every amount on the panel is for two, not one.

What does Daily Value not established mean?

It means no official Daily Value exists for that ingredient, so the panel shows an amount but no percentage (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).

Is the first ingredient on a panel the biggest?

Not always. Read the milligrams, because order is not guaranteed. On Protoflow, hawthorn and epimedium tie at 250 mg.

How can you tell a capsule is not vegan from the label?

Look in other ingredients for gelatin, an animal product. Protoflow lists it, whatever the sales page says.

Does the front of a bottle follow the same rules as the panel?

No. The panel has strict formatting rules (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)), while front phrases such as High Potency have no fixed definition.

Where is the allergen statement on a supplement?

Either in parentheses after the ingredient or in a Contains line (FDA, Food Allergies).
