Saw Palmetto Dosage for Prostate: What Doses Did the Trials Test?

Quick answer

Saw palmetto dosage for prostate studies started at 320 mg of extract a day in the CAMUS trial and rose to 960 mg. None of those doses beat placebo for urinary symptoms. No dose is proven to work, so a bigger number buys nothing we can show. The Protoflow label holds 84.5 mg of fruit per serving.

Trial doses01

What saw palmetto dose did the research test?

The best-known test used 320 mg of extract a day, then 640 mg, then 960 mg.

That was the CAMUS trial, which followed 369 men for 72 weeks and raised the dose at weeks 24 and 48 (Barry et al., JAMA 2011 (CAMUS)). NIH notes that two funded trials, one at a standard dose and one at up to three times as much, did not improve BPH symptoms (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).

So the range is clear, but the answer is not a dose. It is that doubling or tripling did nothing measurable.

Side by side02

How does a label dose compare with the trial doses?

Many labels print fruit powder, trials used extract, and the two are not the same strength.

Saw palmetto amounts per day
WhereAmountForm
CAMUS, first stage (Barry et al., JAMA 2011 (CAMUS))320 mgExtract
CAMUS, last stage (Barry et al., JAMA 2011 (CAMUS))960 mgExtract
Protoflow, 2 capsules (Protoflow bottle label)84.5 mgFruit, no ratio printed

Math: 84.5 divided by 320 is about 0.26. The label has roughly a quarter of the lowest trial dose, and in a different form.

Bigger doses03

Would a higher saw palmetto dose work better?

Evidence says no. Cochrane found no gain in urine flow or prostate size at double and triple doses (Tacklind et al., Cochrane 2012).

  • Higher doses did not raise flow in 32 pooled trials
  • Side effects stay mild, but pills cost more
  • A strong-sounding label such as "High Potency" has no set meaning
Taking more than the label says

The Protoflow label says do not exceed suggested use, and it already carries niacin above the 35 mg limit (NIH ODS, Niacin). Do not stack extra saw palmetto on top.

Before you buy04

What should you ask before choosing a saw palmetto product?

Ask what the form is, what the amount is, and what you hope it will change.

If you still want to try it, tell your clinician and keep any prescription going. Look for the part of the plant, the amount and any extract ratio. If the label is silent on form, the dose cannot be compared with research. See the supplement facts page and the CAMUS trial explained.

FAQ05

Saw palmetto dose questions

What is the standard daily dose of saw palmetto?

No dose is proven for BPH. The trials used 320 mg of extract a day and up to 960 mg, and found no benefit over placebo (Barry et al., JAMA 2011 (CAMUS)).

Can I split a saw palmetto dose through the day?

Trials did not test timing, so there is no evidence either way. Follow the label and ask your pharmacist if unsure.

Is 85 mg of saw palmetto enough?

Compared with the 320 mg trial start, it is about a quarter, and even full doses showed no gain (Barry et al., JAMA 2011 (CAMUS)). Enough for what is the real question.

Does fruit powder equal extract in strength?

No. Extract is concentrated, so a milligram of fruit powder is weaker. A label without an extract ratio cannot be matched to trial doses.

How long did dose trials last?

CAMUS lasted 72 weeks, and NIH says saw palmetto has been used in research for up to 3 years (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).
